After last week’s blog—and the one you’re about to read—you’d probably think I’m in the rod manufacturing business.
I’m not. I just spend way too much time thinking about this stuff.
Last week I talked about looking at rods as tools rather than simply choosing one based on jig weight. This week I want to take that a little further and talk about gram ratings.
Before I get into the examples, I want to clarify that the weights and depths I mention are purely for illustration. They aren’t fixed rules or exact recommendations. They’re simply meant to show conditions can change the way a rod performs.
Because if a rod says it’s rated for 400g, my first question is:
400g where?
Was it tested in 200 feet? 600 feet? 900 feet? Was there current? What size braid was being used?
All of those things can completely change how that “400g rod” actually behaves.
400g Isn’t Always 400g
Take a rod rated for 400g, put a 400g jig on it and fish it in 200–300 feet.
In good conditions, that rod is probably going to be pretty responsive. It might even unload the jig faster than you want.
Now take that exact setup and drop it in 800 feet.
Same rod. Same jig. Completely different response.
The difference is the amount of line in the water.
All that line creates resistance, and the rod has to overcome that resistance before it can transfer energy down to the jig.
A rod that unloads a 400g jig quickly in 200 feet might unload it very slowly in 800 feet—or struggle to unload it at all.
At that depth, maybe that same rod works better with a 300g jig.
Go the other direction and you might be able to put 500g on that “400g rod” in shallow water and still get the slower response you’re looking for.
That’s why I look at gram ratings as a starting point, not a rule.
Now Add Current
Current makes this even more noticeable.
Here in Florida, the East and West Coasts are perfect examples.
On the East Coast, when the Gulf Stream is ripping, the resistance on your line can completely shut a rod down.
I’ve fished 300–400 feet where a Power 4 would normally seem like plenty of rod. Add enough current and suddenly it isn’t.
You might need a Power 6 or even a Power 8.
Not necessarily because the jig needs that much power.
The entire system does.
You’re trying to move the jig while also overcoming the resistance of hundreds of feet of line being pushed through the current.
You could just go to a heavier jig, and sometimes that helps straighten your line angle. But now the rod has to deal with the current, line resistance and a heavier jig.
Sometimes the answer isn’t more jig.
It’s a higher power rod.
Compare that to Florida’s West Coast, where we’re generally fishing much more straight up and down with considerably less current.
The same 400g jig, rod and depth that feels perfect on the West Coast might feel completely underpowered on the East Coast.
Nothing about the equipment changed.
The conditions did.
Give Us a Better Baseline
This is why I’d love to see manufacturers give us more information than just a gram rating.
Instead of:
Jig rating: 200-400g
Give us:
Field tested in 500–600 feet, 300–400g jigs, PE2 braid, low current.
Now I have a real-world baseline.
It doesn’t mean the rod can’t be fished deeper, shallower, heavier or lighter. It just gives me some context for what that rating actually means.
And that’s really the point.
There’s a reason I like having multiple rod powers with me. They’re different tools for different conditions.
I’m not saying you need to go buy an entire set tomorrow. Start with something that covers most of your fishing and slowly add rods as you encounter situations where your current setup isn’t doing what you need.
Because the more time I spend doing this, the less I care about the number printed on the rod.
I care about what the rod actually does in the conditions I’m fishing.
A gram rating gives you a starting point. The water tells you what the rod is actually capable of.
