Why Line Control Matters More Than You Think

A jig doesn’t need a pile of loose line to move naturally. In fact, too much slack can make it harder to control the jig, detect a bite and stay connected to what’s happening below.

One thing you often hear in slow jigging is how important it is to create slack. The advice makes sense up to a point, but somewhere along the way, “give the jig slack” seems to have become the more slack, the better.”

I don’t necessarily agree with that.

For me, the goal isn’t to create slack. The goal is to remove tension from the jig without giving up control of it.

That distinction matters because line control affects more than just jig action. It also determines how clearly you can read the fall, detect subtle bites and respond before the fish has a chance to move off.

When we lift a jig and lower the rod, we want to give it the freedom to do what it was designed to do. Maybe it slides, rolls, turns sideways or even spirals.

I don’t want my line pulling against the jig and stopping that movement, but I also don’t need several feet of loose braid piling up on the water.

Slack vs. No Tension

There’s a big difference between a jig being free of tension and being completely disconnected from it.

When I lower the rod, I’m trying to follow the jig down. I want enough freedom for it to move naturally while keeping the line controlled enough that I can see what’s happening.

That becomes especially important as we fish deeper. In shallower water, say under 300 feet, the line can react and fall much faster. Once you get into 500–700 feet, everything starts happening slower simply because of the amount of line in the water.

Current, line angle and water resistance all reduce the information making its way back to you.

Adding unnecessary slack only increases that disconnect.

Watch the Line

One of the easiest ways to detect a bite while slow jigging is simply by watching your braid.

The jig is falling, and suddenly the line stops, jumps, changes direction or does something it shouldn’t.

That’s often the bite.

If you’ve got a pile of slack floating on the surface, a fish can potentially eat the jig and start moving before you ever see it, causing you to miss the bite.

I’d rather know immediately.

There’s also the obvious problem of tip wraps. Excessive slack around the rod tip is often caused by lowering the rod too quickly.

The simple fix is to slow the movement as you lower the rod from the top of the stroke. Once you reach the top, try adding an almost imperceptible pause to allow the jig to start falling before lowering the rod tip.

That small change can make a big difference in keeping the line under control without putting unnecessary tension on the jig.

More Action Isn’t Always Better

I also think it’s worth questioning the idea that more slack automatically means better jig action.

It might create more movement, but more movement doesn’t necessarily mean better movement.

Sometimes I don’t want a jig kicking all over the place. Especially with less aggressive fish, I may want a controlled movement followed by a natural fall that gives the fish an easy opportunity to eat.

That’s something I’ve personally been experimenting with more and more.

Find the Balance

I’m not saying you should keep constant tension on the jig either. Too much tension can completely kill the action we’re trying to create.

The sweet spot is somewhere between the two.

Not tight. Not completely disconnected.

The amount will change depending on the jig, rod power, depth, current and line angle, which is why I think simply telling someone to “create slack” leaves out a big part of the picture.

Next time you’re jigging, pay attention to what your braid does as you lower the rod.

For me, that’s what line control really comes down to:

Give the jig freedom without giving up control.
